Solar energy lesson with Maggie

Today we had a great solar energy lesson with Maggie from Schoolgen. She came in to teach us more about solar energy and how valuable it really is. Not only are we learning about it right now for inquiry, but we have 12 solar panels on the roof of Room 24 in the senior school.
Here is some information we learned...
  • There are 42 schools in New Zealand with solar panels on the roof - Muritai is 1 of them.
  • Solar is the leading from of renewable energy world wide.
  • Our solar panels were made in Germany - one of the lead countries in the construction of solar panels.
  • Solar panels are thought to last 40+ years. Some of the earliest ones, called first generation solar panels (made 60 years ago) are as good as the day they were made!
  • A village in Chile have found the Schoolgen website and are interested in learning more about solar energy. Their village has no power and they want to explore the possibility of going solar. The website is going to be translated into Spanish so they can learn more!
Tomorrow we are going to have another session with Maggie and learn even more! Check out the schoolgen website (under the links section of our blog)
