The Ultimate Confidence Course Inquiry

Today, Room 12 were set a challenge - in groups of 3-4 design a bridge spanning 35cm and made out of fettuccine!

Each group has a 500g bag of fettuccine and a hot glue gun. That's it!!
They must create a bridge that spans a 35cm gap and must be capable of holding 500 grams! (That's a block of butter!)
The children were so excited about the challenge and wanted to get straight into it!
Firstly, we had a look at different bridges (mainly beam and truss) and how they are designed. We discussed the forces that act on bridges (gravity, weather, traffic etc) and how strong bridges are created.
The children then started to plan their bridges. We quickly realised (during our research) that a triangle is a strong shape that is often used in strong structures (including some bridges).
